Sculpture in Sterling's collection rivals his paintings with the same narrative based composition, richly picturesque, often both playful and serious at the same time.

With sculpture commissioned primarily in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, Sterling is most known for is two prominent public artworks "Man, Child and Gull" in Duluth's Canal Park and "River, Falls and Forest" in Minnesota's Gooseberry Falls State Park.

Perhaps the best known sculptures are part of the Tweed Museum's collection in Duluth, Minnesota: "Herma Priapus" and "Artemis Herm". With these works Sterling reaches deep into his knowledge of ancient Greek art and comes out with modern insightful interpretations.
